BRUNSWICK, Ga. (WSAV) – A man has been arrested on suspicion of killing a Brunswick High School football player as he walked home from practice.

Breon Hartley, 21, of Jacksonville, Florida, has been on the run for over a year.

On June 13, 2023, at approximately 9:20 p.m., Brunswick Police Department officers responded to reports of shots fired in the 2600 block of Johnston Street.

When they arrived, they found My’Kal Ellis lying unconscious on the street. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the accident.

A day later, Brunswick police obtained arrest warrants for Hartley on charges of murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime.

Detectives asked the United States Marshals’ Southeast Regional Task Force for assistance in locating him, but they believed he had left the area.

It was not until Thursday that the task force in Jacksonville took him into custody. Details of his arrest were not initially disclosed.

Hartley is now awaiting extradition back to Glynn County.

The investigation is ongoing, police said. Anyone with additional information on the case is asked to contact Det. Anthony Trollinger at (912) 279-2640 or provide tips anonymously through Silent Witness at (912) 267-5516.
