Cyclist from Portage dies after collision with SUV

PORTAGE, MI – A 20-year-old man was killed Tuesday, July 16, when he was struck by an SUV while riding his bicycle, Portage police said.

A 76-year-old Portage woman was traveling eastbound in the 1300 block of West Center Avenue when she struck the bicyclist, according to a news release from the Portage Department of Public Safety. The bicyclist was attempting to cross the street.

Portage Police and Fire Department responded to the accident at 2:54 p.m.

PDPS officers administered first aid at the scene, but shortly after their arrival the cyclist was pronounced dead, the press release said.

PDPS accident reconstruction and laboratory personnel arrived at the scene. The accident is currently under investigation.

Both lanes of West Centre Avenue were closed until about 4 p.m.
