Who is Ingrid Andress? What you should know about the national anthem singer and four-time Grammy nominee

Before Ingrid Andress became a household name with her rendition of the national anthem, she was a four-time Grammy nominee and known for her 2019 hit single “More Hearts Than Mine.”

Andress, 32, rose to prominence after performing “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the Major League Baseball Home Run Derby in Arlington, Texas, on Monday night. Some called the performance “interesting” and “bizarre.” On Tuesday, Andress revealed on social media that she was drunk at the time.

“I was drunk last night,” she wrote on her social media platforms on Tuesday. “I am checking myself into a clinic today to get the help I need. That was not how I was last night. I apologize to MLB, all the fans and this country that I love so much for that display.”

Who is Ingrid Andress? A songwriter and Grammy nominee

Andress was born in Southfield, Michigan, and grew up in Colorado, where her father was a professional baseball coach for the Colorado Rockies. Andress attended Berklee College of Music in Boston and performed in an a cappella group on NBC’s “The Sing-Off.”

When she moved to Nashville in 2013, Andress started out as a songwriter and co-wrote songs including Charli XCX’s 2017 “Boys” and Bebe Rexha’s 2019 “Girl in the Mirror.”

Andress released her debut studio album, Lady Like, in 2020, which peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart. The album included her 2019 breakthrough single, “More Hearts Than Mine,” which peaked at No. 20 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Controversy over the national anthem: The song is notoriously difficult to sing

Andress’ work received Grammy nominations

In 2021, Andress was nominated for three Grammys, including Best Country Album, Best Country Song and Best New Artist.

She has since released her album “Good Person” in 2022, which includes the song “Wishful Drinking,” a duet with Sam Hunt. The song earned her another Grammy nomination in 2023 for Best Country Duo/Group Performance.

Listeners may recognize Andress from other songs such as “Feel Like This” and “Bed on Fire,” on which she co-sings with recording artist Teddy Swims (“Lose Control”).
