NWS confirms tornado in Indiana near Michigan border

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) – The National Weather Service has confirmed that the storm system that swept across southern Michigan Monday night spawned a tornado in northern Indiana.

A Preliminary report The report released Tuesday afternoon confirmed that a tornado touched down on the south side of Elkhart, about 5 miles south of the state line. Peak sustained winds were measured at about 85 mph, equivalent to a high EF0 rating.


News 8 subsidiary WNDU-TV South Bend reports that the Elkhart County Department of Emergency Management is working to declare a state of emergency for the county in order to mobilize additional resources.

WNDU reports that about 60 homes were damaged and at least six destroyed by the storms. The Salvation Army and the American Red Cross are working to help those left homeless.

The storm, which brought severe weather, did not cause as much damage in Michigan, but brought between 2 and 4 inches of rain to certain parts of the state. causes some floodingSeveral streets in Kalamazoo were closed due to flooding.
