Red Sox slugger linked to National League Central club, deadline approaches

The Boston Red Sox have some difficult decisions to make in the near future.

The 2024 Major League Baseball trade deadline is just two weeks away, and Boston will be looking to add to its ranks. While that’s the case, just before the deadline, one of the Red Sox’s best hitters was mentioned as a fit for the St. Louis Cardinals.

Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report compiled a list of each team and their biggest needs just before the deadline and calls Tyler O’Neill the “perfect player” for St. Louis.

“The Cardinals could really use a right-handed outfielder to add some balance to their lineup alongside left-handed outfielders Brendan Donovan, Alec Burleson and Lars Nootbaar, with Burleson also being used semi-regularly as a designated hitter,” Reuter said. “Ironically, Tyler O’Neill would be the perfect player to fill that void, but he was sent to the Red Sox in the offseason.”

St. Louis could use someone like O’Neill, but it would be shocking if the Red Sox ended up trading him away. Boston will be looking for reinforcements and O’Neill has been a near-perfect addition to the club. He has shined for the Red Sox, hitting 16 home runs and 31 RBIs in 68 games played.

The Cardinals could use the hitter, but Boston needs him and is unlikely to let him go anytime soon as he has a real chance of making the playoffs. The Red Sox are on the rise and so are the Cardinals. A trade doesn’t seem realistic here.
