Some Emmy nomination surprises I’d like to see on Wednesday – GoldDerby

Let’s face it: Every time the Emmy nominations are announced—and that will happen on Wednesday—we look forward to the list with a certain anticipation of inevitability. Usually, the choices follow our predictions pretty closely, especially for those of us who study this stuff for a living, like us at Gold Derby. But since we’re only human (really and truly), we also have our own personal favorites that we know probably have little chance of making it but feel it’s worth giving recognition to anyway.

With that in mind, here are some of my underdog picks that I would celebrate if they received bids in the following twelve categories:

Comedy series

“Ghosts” is the most underrated comedy series on television, lovingly written and hilariously acted. And in the last season, the CBS series has stepped up a gear. The fact that it airs on a broadcast network and the fact that there is so much competition, especially in streaming, speaks against it. Speaking of streaming: Amy Schumer’s The second most underrated show on television, Hulu’s Life and Beth is a funny, emotional, and heartfelt series that explores autism spectrum disorder with spot-on insights.

Comedy actress

Amy Schumer is a comedian, but also an actress with surprising versatility, as her work on “Life and Beth” amply demonstrates. She won an Emmy for her brilliant sketch show “Inside Amy Schumer,” but that was nearly a decade ago. She’s received 13 Emmy nominations, but never for portraying a character with such versatility.

Supporting actor in a comedy

In the last seasons of “Leave it, Larry!” JB Smoove has proven to be the show’s secret weapon, an effortlessly clever comedy dynamo. He absolutely deserves to receive his first nomination in the show’s final season. Will it happen? Probably not. But an editor can dream.

Supporting Actress in a Comedy

It would actually not be a big surprise (maybe only a small one) if Allison Janney to get a nomination for her masterful work in Palm Royale. In fact, she seems to be on the verge of being nominated. But she’s always deserved it, and the Television Academy agrees. They love her, they really love her. She’s won seven awards in her career (out of 15 nominations), in addition to a single Oscar, and I’d love to see her get another nomination here.

Drama actor

Idris Elba has been nominated for five Emmys, including four for his portrayal of the brilliant homicide detective in Luther. But I fell in love with his work in Hijack, a seven-hour thriller centered around a single airplane hijacking. And his performance is spectacular.

Drama actress

Mariska Hargitay has been nominated eight times for Law & Order: SVU, but not since 2011. She won the trophy once, in 2006. But the woman is an absolute television legend who deserves a nomination every year. It’s amazing when you consider that Hargitay has played the role of Detective Olivia Benson on the show since 1999, so for 25 years. She has now appeared in an incredible 552 episodes. She started on the show when she was 25 years old. Now she’s 60. It’s time for her ninth nomination, don’t you think?

Limited series

One could easily argue that a dozen miniseries deserved a nomination rather than the measly five that received the honor. It has become by far the most competitive category. One that is overwhelmingly likely to miss out is Under the Bridge, the true crime thriller about the murder of a young teenage girl in Canada. It is gripping and stunningly well written, directed and acted.

TV movie

One of the most beautiful television experiences of this year was the romantic coming-of-age comedy “Musica” with the main role as well as the script and direction of the charming Rudy Mancuso. He really fell in love with his co-star Camila Mendes and she with him during filming – and the chemistry between them is clear to see. It’s just a wonderful film that makes you happy to be alive and deserves some awards. Unfortunately, it probably won’t get them.

Limited Actress

Uzo Aduba is one of the most consistently good actresses working today, and her performance in the shamefully underrated Painkiller was astonishingly good. But unfortunately, she has to compete with potential nominees, including Oscar winner Jodie Foster And Brie Larson and Oscar nomination Naomi Wattstherefore it is a big challenge for them to find recognition. The same applies to Arie Mia Lobertithe exquisite blind young star of “All the Light We Cannot See,” whose work in the four-part Netflix series was a revelation.

Limited actor

I’m not entirely sure why the nine-part WWII aviation drama Masters of the Air hasn’t received nearly as much praise as it deserves, unlike Band of Brothers and The Pacific before it. It features exceptional performances and an epic feel. Of all the actors in it, the best acting was by Callum Turnerwho portrayed the real pilot Major John “Bucky” EganTurner will be a big star. One day he will even be nominated for an Emmy.

Supporting Actress with Limited Cast

Lily Gladstone And Riley Keough are the big names who starred in “Under the Bridge.” But it was the unknown Chloe Guidry who ended up stealing every scene in which she played the real protagonist Josephine Bellan emotionally damaged, tyrannical sociopath who was involved in the murder of a 14-year-old Canadian girl in 1997 Reena Virk. It is a blood-curdling achievement that foretells a great and successful career.

Supporting actor in limited cast

Johnny Flynn wonderfully plays the unfortunate role of Dickie Greenleaf – a role made famous on the screen by Jude Law in anthony Minghellas 1999 – in the excellent film adaptation of “Ripley”. Unfortunately, the competition seems to be too great for him to sneak through and receive a surprise offer.
