Two dead and one injured after boat capsizes in Lake Michigan

Ozaukee County authorities and the U.S. Coast Guard rescued three people Monday evening whose boat capsized on Lake Michigan near Port Washington. While one person wearing a life jacket was responsive during the rescue, the other two were later pronounced dead, authorities said.

At around 6:24 p.m., the Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office received reports from the U.S. Coast Guard of a distressed 17-foot fishing boat that sank in Lake Michigan, according to a news release from the office Tuesday.

The Ozaukee County Emergency Management Agency rescue boat, a Port Washington Fire Department fireboat, U.S. Coast Guardsmen from Milwaukee and Sheboygan, and a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter headed to the suspected area using the boat’s last coordinates, the news release said.

Lifeboats found three people in the water: one was semi-conscious and breathing, the other two were unconscious and not breathing. All three were taken to Aurora Medical Center in Grafton.

Rescue personnel performed life-saving measures, but the two unconscious victims were later pronounced dead.

The two victims were identified as a 50-year-old man and a 51-year-old woman, both from Illinois. The person who survived the incident is a 26-year-old man from Beloit, who is currently in stable condition.

According to the sheriff’s office, the boat, a 2008 Triton Model 177, was exposed to waves between 2-4 feet high and water temperatures of about 52 degrees. The boat reportedly took on water when a wave hit the side and tipped it over. It was submerged before rescue and has not been found.

The Grafton Fire Department, Saukville Fire Department and Port Washington Police Department also assisted with the incident.
