On summer days when it’s too hot to play outside or when summer thunderstorms roll around, reading is a great way for kids to pass the time. Every year, Barnes & Noble offers a summer reading program that encourages kids to read and helps them win a free book.

The year-long program for children in grades 1-6 is free and easy. Simply print out this summer reading journal and have your children read any eight books and write down what they like best and why.

Once the kids have completed the journal, just bring it to a Barnes & Noble bookstore between July 1 and August 31 and they can choose a free book. The titles are divided by grade level (1st and 2nd, 3rd and 4th, and 5th and 6th), but there are at least a dozen to choose from for each reading level.

You’ll find several book series to choose from on the list, but also graphic novels, books in Spanish, children’s classics, and even a novel about the Summer Olympics.
