Athletic Club suffers serious setback on the injury front

La Liga club Athletic Club suffered a significant personnel setback on Tuesday.

This comes amid confirmation that a key member of the club’s first team will not be available for selection for the foreseeable future.

The player in question? Unai Simon.

Goalkeeper Simón, on the other hand, has just played a central role in helping the Spanish national team triumph at the 2024 European Championship.

The 27-year-old started all but one of La Roja’s tournament matches, once again proving his reputation as one of the best footballers between the posts.

However, Simón managed such heroic deeds despite a wrist injury.

After returning to the Blibao base this week, the goalkeeper had to undergo immediate surgery to treat a case of “scaphoid-monochondral instability”.

Speaking during a public appearance (quoted by World Sports) on Tuesday, Josean Lekue, head of the Athletic Club’s medical service, informed about Simón’s health condition:

“It’s an injury that has been developing for months and we’ve been monitoring its identification and progression throughout the season. We don’t normally enter a period of injury rest, but it’s a development that’s been going on for months.”

In response to further questions about the recovery timeline for Los Leones’ No. 1, Lekue said:

“I can’t say exactly, because it depends not only on us, but also on the surgical procedure itself. All surgeons know what they are going to do in all operations, but in almost all of them they introduce nuances that the surgical procedure itself may recommend. We are operating within a sufficiently broad framework to not indicate more than a period of months.”
