The 2024 PGA Tour season is upon us and things are getting more and more exciting. The Open Championship is one of the most prestigious tournaments in all of sport and with a strong field at Royal Troon Golf Club, we can expect thrills, excitement and everything in between. Links golf always offers potential for underdog stories and this year is likely to be no exception. We’ve found 5 top-tier picks this week that are worth backing in case we see another surprise name win the infamous Claret Jug.
The best deep value games at The Open
Robert MacIntyre +4000
I loved that Macintyre entered the Open Championship last year at +8000. He had just finished 2nd at the Scottish Open and ended up finishing 71st at the Royal Liverpool. But now he has WON the Scottish Open and has already won another event on tour this season.
He enters this event with half the price tag of last year, but there is still plenty to be gained for a player who clearly thrives in links conditions and now knows what it takes to win on the PGA Tour, having already done so twice in 2024.
As a further confirmation bias, he finished in the top 10 in three of his last four appearances at the Open Championship.

Max Homa +10000
Max Homa’s breakout in 2024 wasn’t as explosive as many expected, but that’s normal when you look at his game in general. He’s not the best hitter, nor is he the most dominant putter, but he’s developed an extremely versatile game that only complements his hitting power.
He has three top-10 finishes this year and has become an elite scrambler – that counts for a lot when you consider the gorse and treacherous bunkers that await you at Royal Troon. He also finished 10th in last year’s Open Championship.
I don’t mind putting a few lottery tickets on Homa to win outright and finish in the top 10 (+850).
Ernie Els +70000
I know what you’re thinking. Ernie Els is 54 years old now and no longer plays on the PGA Tour, how is he supposed to have a chance? Well, at that price, I’m willing to take the risk. Especially in the top 10 market, which is +5000.
Els won the Bridgestone Senior Players Championship and comes into the event with decades of experience. He has won the Open twice, most recently 12 years ago. He is as reliable as can be, having won four majors and obviously playing well enough to at least make the cut.
The Open is for reliable golfers who can handle the ups and downs of links golf, and Els knows the pitfalls better than most. He’s in great form and has never finished worse than the top 10 in his last four senior tournaments. This could be a really crazy lottery ticket. 50-1 odds of a seasoned veteran sneaking into the top 10? I’m all for it.

Will Zalatoris +17500
I always like to bet on Will Zalatoris. After having to withdraw from the Open last year due to injury, the 27-year-old recovered impressively and returned to the field this year.
He’s still one of the best ball-strikers on Tour, with three top-10 finishes to his name this year. Although he’s been a little weaker recently and withdrew from the Rocket Mortgage Classic, this could be the perfect time to buy into a player who has proven his worth in majors time and again in his short career, fighting his way into the top group whenever the lights are brightest.
Jordan Spieth +5500
It’s been an interesting year for Jordan Spieth. While he’s had three top-10 finishes, he’s been languishing in the middle of the pack for the past few months. So if you want a few extra options on your betting slips this week, backing one of the best short-game players in the world is certainly a good idea.
The American has five top-10 finishes at The Open, including a win in 2017. His pedigree counts here and, despite its difficulties, this course perfectly suits the strengths of one of the world’s most creative players.
