Cause of death of Richard Simmons is under investigation

The cause of Richard Simmons’ death is under investigation, the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed to several media outlets.

The legendary fitness guru died in his Los Angeles home on Saturday, July 13, one day after his birthday. He was 76 years old.

The authorities confirmed to several media outlets that “there was no third-party negligence.”

The official cause of death has since been deferred, meaning an investigation and additional tests are required before a definitive explanation for his death can be given. It may take up to three months for a decision to be made.

The cause of death was listed as “other significant illnesses,” the case status was still “open,” while the place of death was listed as “residence.”

The former fitness trainer’s longtime press spokesman, Tom Estey, confirmed his death to several media outlets.

“The world has truly lost an angel,” Estey told People.

As previously reported, authorities were called to Simmons’ home by his housekeeper and he was pronounced dead at the scene. According to TMZ, authorities responded to a call from the housekeeper around 10 a.m. on Saturday.

A Los Angeles Fire Department spokesperson told Fox News Digital that emergency responders were dispatched to the home because a 76-year-old man had gone into cardiac arrest, but Simmons was not identified as the patient.

The patient’s death was confirmed at the scene of the accident, the LAFD said.

In March, he announced he had been diagnosed with skin cancer, and that same month he shocked fans by sharing on Facebook that he was dying. He later had to apologize for the “confusion” when his manager clarified that he was not dying at the time.
