Trojans’ Chris Lewis out for the rest of the season after cancer diagnosis and treatment

TROY, Alabama (WTVY) – Troy University wide receiver Chris Lewis will not play football next season after being diagnosed with and treated for bone cancer, he told ESPN.

Lewis first spoke about his cancer diagnosis in March, explaining that he learned of a malignant bone tumor behind his left knee after Troy won the 2023 Sun Belt Championship.

After ten weeks of chemotherapy, Lewis underwent surgery in April to remove the mass from his femur.

Lewis is entering his third year at Troy, in his sophomore year he rushed for a record 735 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Last year he was ranked as the nation’s best receiver with an average of around 23 yards per catch.

“My teammates and coaches have been calling, texting, checking on me,” Lewis said. “When I’m at Children’s (of Alabama), they come and sit with me … I miss it (at Troy); I just miss being with the team and the normal schedule that I’m used to.”

Lewis has set up a GoFundMe campaign to cover medical expenses and hopes to raise $150,000.
