INDIANAPOLIS – Caeleb Dressel proved again that he is currently the fastest swimmer in America after winning the men’s 50-meter freestyle final at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials at Lucas Oil Stadium on Friday night.

With a time of 21.41 – 0.20 seconds faster than his semifinal on Thursday – Dressel outscored Chris Guiliano, who finished second with a time of 21.69. The pair were scheduled to swim the individual event at the Paris Olympics.

Dressel, the American record holder in the 50-meter freestyle, is now guaranteed to swim an individual event in Paris after finishing third on Wednesday and narrowly missing out in the 100-meter freestyle behind winner and Olympic newcomer Guiliano. However, Dressel is still expected to compete in the men’s 4×100-meter freestyle relay, along with Guiliano, Hunter Armstrong and Jack Alexy, who finished fourth in the 50-meter freestyle final.

Dressel, the 27-year-old swimmer and seven-time Olympic champion, also has a chance to qualify in the individual 100-meter butterfly, with semifinals taking place later on Friday. This will be his third Olympic Games.

The 50m freestyle is a full-throttle, no-holds-barred event, built on raw power. And this event was so close that all eight swimmers in the final qualifying session were within 0.30 seconds of each other in the second half of the 21-second zone. In Friday’s final, the difference between first and eighth was 0.67 seconds.

Michael Andrew, who finished fourth in the 50-meter freestyle at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, finished fifth.
