“Charmed” star Holly Marie Combs and others pay tribute to Shannen Doherty after her death at the age of 53

Holly Marie Combs remembers her “Charmed” co-star Shannen Doherty.

On Monday, Combs posted a moving tribute on Instagram to Doherty, who died on Saturday, July 13, at the age of 53 after a years-long battle with cancer, a spokesperson said.

“My better half of 31 years,” Combs began in the caption of her Instagram post, which featured a series of photos of the two from the past few years. “There’s a hole in my chest and I can’t seem to breathe. A part of me is missing, even though I know exactly what you would say to me right now. I know exactly what you would say to me right now.”

“I know your immortal spirit will live on in me and my children, whom you loved as your own,” she continued. “They will live on with your sense of purpose and pride. They will be honest and stand up for what is right.”

“Your fire will live on in them and the many other Enchanted Ones you raised. A fierce fighter to the end,” Combs said. “My most passionate fighter. My loyal protector. My best friend. You taught me what family means. You were and will always be my sister. I love you.”

Doherty played Prue Halliwell in Charmed and Combs portrayed Piper Halliwell, Prue’s sister. The series is about a group of witches who use their powers to fight evil.

Rose McGowan, who replaced Doherty as the third star of “Charmed,” said Doherty had the “heart of a lion.”

“Passion for the craft is often mislabeled as a problem. Shannen was passion. I met her in the 90s and was impressed. To really get to know her later in life was a beautiful gift. This woman fought for her life,” McGowan said in an Instagram caption accompanied by pictures of Doherty as a child and as an adult.

“Shannen knew how to be a star because she had been one since she was a child. Her work ethic was inspiring until the end,” McGowan added.

McGowan praised Doherty as a “force of energy” who will live forever.

“Rest now, warrior,” she said.

Doherty’s “Charmed” co-star Brian Krause, who played Leo Wyatt on the show, also posted about Doherty, saying he was “truly heartbroken” by her death.

“You showed me what strength is,” said Krause. “You taught me to be fearless and to live with purpose. To know your own worth and to stick to your goals. Forever loved!”

There was also sadness and shock from the Hollywood community, which Doherty has been a part of since she was a child when she played Jenny Wilder in Little House on the Prairie. Her co-stars from Beverly Hills, 90210 paid touching tributes to Doherty, who played Brenda Walsh in the series.

“Our connection was real and honest,” Jennie Garth wrote on social media alongside photos of herself with Doherty. “We were pitted against each other so many times, but none of that reflected the truth of our real relationship, which was based on mutual respect and admiration.”

The actress, who played Kelly Taylor in the series, continued: “She was brave, passionate, determined and very loving and generous. I will miss her and will always hold her dear in my heart and memories. My heart breaks for her family and Bowie and all the people who loved her.”

Tori Spelling, who played Donna Martin on “90210,” shared a photo of herself with Doherty on her Instagram stories, along with several broken heart emojis.

“I’m still at a loss for words, but WE knew and that’s what matters,” she captioned the photo.

Jason Priestly, who played Brandon Walsh, the twin of Doherty’s Brenda, expressed his condolences.

“I am shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of my friend Shannen. She was a force of nature and I will miss her. Sending love and light to her family during this dark time,” Priestly said on Instagram.

Carol Potter, who played the matriarch of the Walsh family, said she too was shocked and sad.

“What a journey she has had! She is gone too soon. She has stayed true to herself throughout and has given us an example of courage and perseverance in dealing with her own death. May she rest in peace,” she said on Instagram.

James Eckhouse, who played the Walsh family patriarch Jim, said her death was a “loss.”

“She was fierce in her work, fierce in her love, fierce in her long, courageous battle with cancer. Shannen, we will miss you very much,” he wrote on Instagram.

Gabrielle Carteris, who played the role of Andrea Zuckerman in the popular teen drama, also expressed her condolences. She remembered actor Luke Perry, who played the role of Dylan McKay and died of a severe stroke in March 2019. He was 52 years old.

“So young – so sad. Rest in peace Shannon (sic). I know Luke is there with open arms to love you,” she wrote on Instagram.

Brian Austin Green, who played David in the series, mourned Doherty as if he were a sister.

“Shan. My sister. You loved me through everything. You were a huge part of my understanding of love. I will miss you more than I can handle right now. Thank you for this gift,” Green wrote in his Instagram story.

Actress Olivia Munn, who spoke openly about her battle with cancer, said the late actress faced her diagnosis “with so much dignity, strength and grace.”

Director Kevin Smith praised Doherty’s change in the dynamics of ’90s culture.

“Long before any other pop culture figure ‘broke’ the internet, @theshando single-handedly destroyed it in the early ’90s. That’s an incredible feat considering the internet as we know it didn’t even exist back then,” he wrote alongside a carousel of pictures of him and the actress.

Doherty, who starred in Smith’s 1995 film “Mallrats,” “was a real talent and she became a good friend,” Smith said.

Smith, who said Doherty was “not a shy wallflower,” added he was grateful for their 30-year friendship.

“She died way too soon. I miss you already, Do-Do. Thank you for going to the mall with me – and for thirty years of friendship. My Canadian buddy was right: you are (and always will be) an American icon,” he said.

Dave Coulier remembers Doherty with “a beautiful smile. Today I will also think of the women in my life who have all succumbed to cancer – my mother, my sister Sharon and my niece Shannon, who were all so strong and so beautiful.”

Sarah Michelle Gellar also paid tribute to her friend on Instagram and asked her followers to “honor” her with donations to animal welfare organizations because Doherty loved animals.

“How do you even find the right words to sum up 30 years of friendship? I keep reminding myself that it only hurts so much because there was so much love,” Gellar wrote in the caption of her post. “Thank you for all your kind words and support. I love all the messages about how important @theshando was to you. So let’s honor her.”

“I know this would make our girl happy (and produce that deep throaty laugh we all love) 💔 💔💔,” she added.
