In the run-up to the British Open, the odds table changed this morning. I haven’t seen much movement at the top of the table, but those who played well in the Scottish Open have been adjusted for the Open ahead of our 10th trip to Royal Troon. We definitely have to start with Robert MacIntyre, Scotland’s Man of the Year. He is now a two-time winner on the PGA Tour, and his overall odds were 65/1 before today. Bobby Mac’s odds are 40/1 this morning!
Much like the stock market, you should have grabbed MacIntyre this week if you wanted him when the final birdie putt went in the hole on Sunday afternoon. Second-place finisher Adam Scott only fell from 80-1 to 75-1, which could be worth a bet. You’ll need to hit the ball well this week, and Adam was excellent with the big club. Three men qualified, expanding the field to 159 yesterday: Richard Mansell, Alex Noren and Aaron Rai. Rai’s recent play most grabs our attention. He opened at 70-1.
We grabbed Aaron on Monday last week and almost made money on it. His 63 on Sunday helped him climb the stellar leaderboard, finishing T-4. Rai not a big name for you? Remember Brian Harman finished T-12 at the Scottish Open last year before winning the Claret Jug. Our Golf Digest experts Chris Powers and Steve Hennessey weighed in on our weekly video. Do you agree with them?
I run to the window to grab Tony Finau at +5000. Finau has finished at least T-18 in his last five starts. That streak of events includes the PGA Championship and the U.S. Open. Tony was ranked 30th in the world eight weeks ago, now he’s 18th and still climbing. I haven’t even gotten to the best part: Finau finished strong at the Open. In seven starts in contention for the Claret Jug, Tony has brought home six top-30 finishes. His trajectory control, underrated short game and slower greens give him a great chance on Royal Troon’s Old Course.
Watch the video below to learn more about our favorite bets and players we recommend for the 2024 British Open:
Scottie Scheffler is the favorite, but at +500 it’s too much of a risk. His odds would have to be double that for me to take the bait. Troon is becoming a lag putting and flatsticking contest within 10 feet. Putting like at Pinehurst? It’s time to eclipse the favorite at that number and watch another ball striker (like Henrik Stenson) take the win at Troon.
