U.S. Representative John James spoke Monday night at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee about his military experience and his upbringing with working-class parents in Michigan.

The Republican National Convention is taking place in Milwaukee through Thursday, where former President Donald Trump will officially accept the party’s nomination for the 2024 election on Thursday.

  • Who he is: James, one of the country’s most prominent Black Republicans, has been representing Michigan’s 10th congressional district since 2023. Before serving in Congress, James worked at his father’s company, James Group International, and became CEO of its subsidiary, Renaissance Global Logistics. After graduating from West Point, James also served eight years of active military duty.
  • What role does he play: James was the Republican nominee to represent Michigan in the U.S. Senate in 2018 and 2022. James serves on the Transportation Committee, the Foreign Affairs Committee, the Education and Workforce Committee, and the Energy and Commerce Committee.
  • Key quote: “My family’s story is the story of the American dream, but my biggest concern right now, my biggest fear, is whether the children of today will be able to look back and tell the same story.”

When and where will the Republican National Convention take place?

The Republican National Convention will take place over four days from July 15 to 18 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The Fiserv Forum, home of the Milwaukee Bucks, will be the main venue for the RNC.

There will also be events at the nearby Panther Arena and the Baird Center at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
