Northwood’s Jake Jekielek follows his former teammate in the MLB draft

Jake Jekielek followed his former teammate on Monday, giving Northwood University two former pitchers in the 2024 Major League Baseball Draft.

The Texas Rangers selected Jakielek, a right-handed reliever, in the 10th round of the draft, 315th overall.

Former Northwood pitcher Derek Clark was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels in the ninth round.

Jekielek, of Sterling Heights Stevenson, finished his four-year career at Northwood with 16 saves, third in school history.

The 6-foot-3 right-hander had eight saves and a 5-4 record as a senior, allowing 56 strikeouts and five walks. In league play, Jekielek was 3-0 with four saves and a 1.09 earned run average for the 33-23 Timberwolves.

Jekielek plays for the Royal Oak Leprechauns of the Northwoods League and earned a spot in the league’s all-start game on Tuesday, July 23, in Mankato, Minnesota.

Jekielek, who played for Battle Creek in 2023, has appeared in 12 games with six saves and a 2-1 record in 22 2/3 innings. He has allowed 10 hits, two earned runs and eight walks, 29 strikeouts and a 0.79 earned run average.
