The county prosecutor’s office on Monday amended charges against a Clinton Township man after his brother died from gunshot wounds allegedly inflicted by the suspect.

Corey Deyshaun Cook was put on trial earlier this month for shooting his mother and seriously wounding his brother on July 5.

The brother, 31-year-old Arkollin Dleon Cook, was in a nearby hospital and was on a ventilator. He recently died, according to the Macomb County District Attorney’s Office.

“The charge has been amended to reflect the death of his brother,” Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido said in a press release. “Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones affected by this tragedy.”

Lucido had previously told The Macomb Daily that prosecutors were not aware of a motive for the shooting.

According to prosecutors, Cook shot his 49-year-old mother, Yolanda Cook, and his brother in their Harper Avenue apartment.

Prosecutors said after shooting the victims, Cook went to the Clinton Township Police Department to turn himself in. He was then detained while officers investigated.

Police found Ms Cook inside the residence, where she was pronounced dead.

Corey Cook was initially charged with first-degree premeditated murder, which carries a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole, and assault with intent to murder.

Due to the brother’s death, the charge was changed from assault to first-degree intentional murder. Cook was also charged with two counts of possession of a firearm.

Cook remains in the Macomb County Jail on $1 million bail. A probation hearing is scheduled for Monday, July 22, at 1 p.m. in 41B District Court.

A fund has now been set up to help the family cover funeral costs. Anyone who would like to donate can do so at gofund.me/e2f4dd15.
