Republicans in Michigan criticize Governor Whitmer at party convention

Milwaukee – The Michigan Republican delegation to the Republican Party National Convention used the attention during Monday’s roll call vote on the party’s presidential nomination to attack Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

In the roll call voting tradition, a representative from each state typically gives a speech at the convention extolling the qualities of their state and announcing how its delegates voted for the various presidential candidates.

When the process reached Michigan on the opening day of the convention in Milwaukee, Delegate Anne DeLisle, a Republican from Genesee County, referred to Michigan as the home of the Michigan State University Spartans, the University of Michigan Wolverines and the “gasoline-powered automobile.”

She added that Michigan is also home to “the worst governor in America.”

Later, DeLisle, chairwoman of the Republican 8th Congressional District Committee, mentioned the so-called “blue wall” of states that traditionally vote Democrat in presidential elections.

“We are going to tear down this wall,” DeLisle said before announcing that Trump had won 51 of the 55 delegate seats at the Michigan convention.

Whitmer is widely considered a rising star in Democratic politics, securing a second term in Michigan’s highest office in November 2022 by 10 percentage points over Republican challenger Tudor Dixon (54% to 44%).

While Biden won Michigan in 2020 by 51% to 48% ahead of then-President Donald Trump, Trump defeated Democrat Hillary Clinton by 47.5% to 47.3%, or 10,703 votes. This was the first time a Republican has won Michigan since 1988.

When asked about the comments at the Republican convention, Lavora Barnes, chairwoman of the Michigan Democratic Party, said she was “surprised that MIGOP put out its dumpster fire long enough to bring its delegates to Milwaukee.”

There have been fierce internal divisions within Michigan’s Republican Party over the past year, leading to a vote in January to remove former party chair Kristina Karamo.

“Governor Whitmer has made Michigan a model Democratic state for the country and created the best economy in the Midwest,” Barnes said. “Not to mention beating the sloppy MIGOP candidates by over 10 points not once, but twice.”

“The MIGOP apparently even thinks that someone from Ohio should be vice president, no wonder they keep losing. …”

Former Republican President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he has nominated Ohio Senator JD Vance as his vice presidential running mate.

In recent weeks, some pundits have touted Whitmer, 52, as a possible successor to President Joe Biden if he steps down as the Democratic nominee. But Whitmer has said she supports Biden and believes “100 percent” that Biden can win Michigan in his race against Trump in November.
