Should the Bucs extend Chris Godwin’s contract before training camp?

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers spent most of the 2024 offseason trying to retain their own stars, but there are still a few whose contracts were not extended long-term this season.

All-Pro offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs will likely revitalize the market at his position sometime this year with a new mega-deal from the Bucs, but what about veteran wide receiver Chris Godwin?

ESPN’s Aaron Schatz says extending Godwin’s contract should be a priority for the Bucs before training camp begins next month:

Godwin’s contract expires after the 2024 season, but let’s not think too much about it. He’s an absolutely above-average wide receiver in the NFL and someone Tampa Bay would like to keep. An extension could also help spread Godwin’s salary cap over the three years the Bucs would be carrying dead money under his current contract.

This definitely makes a lot of sense for the Bucs, as they would like to keep Godwin for the next few years alongside future Hall of Famer Mike Evans.

Godwin is one of the most complete and versatile pass receivers in the league and should be even more productive this season as he returns to the slot under new offensive coordinator Liam Coen.

Given that Godwin’s numbers are likely to increase this year, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Bucs work on extending his contract for the next few seasons before this season starts.
