Michigan Voter Guide: Important Elections

As is often the case, Michigan will once again find itself at the center of the political universe, or at least close to it, in 2024, and the Aug. 6 primary will help decide the lower-ballot elections in a hotly contested presidential year. These elections will help determine which party controls the U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, state legislature and local offices, and the Detroit Free Press will be keeping an eye on them all.

Michigan US Senate

The big – and only – statewide contest this fall after the U.S. presidential race is a rare vacancy in the U.S. Senate that became open when the incumbent Democrat, Senator Debbie Stabenow, decided early last year not to run for a fifth six-year term. The last time a Senate seat in Michigan was vacant was in 2014. Republicans are senating a chance to win this year, but if they succeed, it would be the first time since 1994 that a Democrat has lost a U.S. Senate seat in the state.

Michigan, US House

There are 13 U.S. House seats up for grabs in the state, but only a handful of them are expected to be contested, starting with the open seats in central Michigan and the Flint-Saginaw-Bay City area. Democrats hold the narrow edge in the current congressional delegation, with a 7-6 margin of seats in the U.S. House. The August 6 primary will help set the stage for deciding those races.

Michigan State House

For the first time in 40 years, Democrats control both houses of the Michigan Legislature, as well as the offices of governor, attorney general and secretary of state. To keep that that way next year, they must continue to hold the majority in the state’s House of Representatives, where 110 seats are up for grabs. The primaries will help determine whether Republicans are able to overturn the Democrats’ slim 56-54 majority.
