Arizona Diamondbacks win series against Toronto Blue Jays

The Diamondbacks entered the final series of the first half against the Toronto Blue Jays with the goal of getting over .500 for the first time since April and, most importantly, carrying the positive momentum into the break.

Friday night’s first game seemed like another missed opportunity to get over .500, but thankfully the answerbacks showed up again and this time it was thanks to Young King Alek Thomas and his 2 out, 2 run single followed by Domo’s walkoff sac-fly in the 9th.

Brandon wanted to know from Gabe and Brett if they believe Ryne Nelson has done enough to keep his spot in the starting lineup when Monty returns. He also raised the question of whether it’s too early to worry about Alek and his issues on offense, or if this crucial setback is a sign that he’s slowly turning things around.

Saturday’s Star Wars Night was no disappointment for all the fans in attendance as the Snakes delivered a 12-1 victory to the Blue Jays. Yilber Diaz’s second consecutive impressive performance had the guys revisiting the Nelson question from Game 1 and wondering if Diaz can make enough good plays to earn that spot or if he’s still the underdog. Corbin became the DBacks’ first leadoff hitter in franchise history with 6 RBI in a game, leaving the team wondering which performance was more impressive. Corbin Carroll with his 2 HR, 6 RBI or Eugenio Suarez with his 4th HR in his last 7 games.

The Diamondbacks let their ace Zac Gallen take the ball in hopes of a sweep, but he didn’t make it past the 4th inning, allowing 7 runs and a lot of hard contact. Since this was his second consecutive failure on the mound, the team discussed what exactly Zac’s problems might be. Gabe had an interesting thought that maybe the way Gabi sets up for Gallen’s curve is a clue to the batters and they know it’s coming. The offense was fortunately able to relieve him of responsibility for the loss, as a swinging bunt single by Jake McCarthy that became a double on the error was the catalyst for a 7-run inning, giving the team renewed optimism that we’re seeing more signs that they might be returning to answerbacks on a more regular basis.

With the All Star Break now officially underway, that also meant the MLB Draft was about to take place, and the Diamondbacks definitely have a guy they’re looking to get, and if he’s there, they’re going for it. The crew touched on Slade Caldwell, Ryan Waldschmidt, and JD Dix a bit, but be sure to check out Steak85’s Snake Pit MLB Draft coverage for more in-depth analysis!
