Dementia and care courses

Dementia and Alzheimer’s are difficult diseases for patients and their caregivers, but thanks to a new program, you can learn to cope with these challenges.

The John McIntire Library in Zanesville offers an educational series on dementia and caregiving every third Friday of the month. On that Friday, a class called “Supporting Independence” is held at 4 p.m.

“Programs like these are critical to our community. They provide caregivers with important resources and support, helping them manage the challenges and stress associated with caring for loved ones with dementia. By promoting education and awareness, we reduce stigma and promote compassion and understanding. These programs also focus on balancing safety and independence for people with dementia, improving their quality of life. They promote community connections and ensure access to quality materials and resources, ultimately improving the well-being of everyone involved,” said Skyler Tigner, the John McIntire Library’s assistant librarian for adult services.

While these courses serve an educational purpose, they also provide an opportunity to share experiences and support each other in coping with the difficulties associated with Alzheimer’s and dementia.

“I’ve been to every single class. It’s been really eye-opening. Especially because people from the community come in and hear that there are a few support groups in town, but not a lot of education about it. And people come in and honestly get emotional and tell us what’s going on in their lives, ask the educators personal questions and it’s really opened my eyes,” Tigner said.
