FULL HOUSE’s DJ Tanner should have had this love affair

David Lipper was supposed to play DJ Tanner’s longtime friend in the 90s sitcom FULL HOUSE, but then the show was canceled.

“I was supposed to be her next boyfriend for the rest of the show until they found out the show was being canceled,” he told Dave Coulier on the podcast “Full House Rewind.”

Lipper played Viper, a member of Uncle Jesse’s band who became the secret lover of 17-year-old DJ Tanner (Candace Cameron Bure).

“Lipper’s last appearance was in the episode ‘DJ’s Choice,’ a half-hour in which DJ felt pressured to choose between tattooed rocker Viper and rich kid Nelson (Jason Marsden),” EW reported.

“Then they decided that she had to… make a decision between Nelson and me because I dumped her and then I wanted her back and then it was supposed to be me, but then she didn’t choose anyone because the show is ending,” Lipper said of the episode.

“Viper’s romance with the eldest Tanner sister was never rekindled after she chose not to be with him or Nelson at the end of the original series,” Screen Rant reported. “Instead, DJ and Steve became a couple in the FULLER HOUSE storyline after the two first dated in FULL HOUSE Season 5. By the end of the sequel series, the two are married, despite many ups and downs and many different relationships throughout their lives.”

Courier explained why the popular family show suddenly ended.

“When the WB network started, we were told that it was possible that we would do two more seasons on WB,” Coulier said. “But by that point, by Season 8, people were thinking, ‘How many more stories can we tell? We’ve already told 192 of them.’ You know, not everyone was excited. I thought, ‘I’ll do two more seasons, man. I’m having a blast. You know, I’ll come in and do Popeye and leave.'”

“I wish I could have been on it longer, and I wish there had been more seasons,” Lipper added. The show ran from 1987 to 1995.

Lipper also mentioned that despite the numerous films he has appeared in since then, people still know him primarily from FULL HOUSE.

“Actually, I get recognized more often from FULL HOUSE than from all the 60 films I’ve made since then,” he laughed.

Movieguide has already reported on the bond between the actors of FULL HOUSE.

The actor also spoke about the enduring popularity of FULL HOUSE, attributing it to the cast’s real-life bond.

“I think people could sense that we really loved each other and still love each other. You can’t fake that. It’s really hard to do,” Coulier explained. “We text someone on their birthday, we congratulate each other on things, we ask each other for help. It’s really a wonderful family. I don’t think any of us expected at the beginning that this would happen for the rest of our lives. So I stay in touch with everyone.”

He continued, “We’re like a family, you know? We bicker, we argue, we blame people. We have problems with each other, but at the end of the day we love each other and we kind of work through it. I mean, we’ve been through cancellations, births, deaths, weddings, divorces – the stuff that every family goes through.
