Trailer for the crime series “Tokyo Swindlers” released

Fraud is currently a topic of growing concern in Asia, and Netflix is adding “Tokyo Swindlers” to its lineup of Japanese live-action programs.

Ayano Go and Toyokawa Etsushi lead the cast of the seven-episode crime series, which is an adaptation of a bestselling novel by Shinjo Ko originally published by Shueisha Bunko.

The protagonists are a group of cunning con artists led by Harrison Yamanaka (Toyokawa) who use fake documents and recruit fraudsters to pose as landowners and defraud major land developers. Their biggest target is a 10 billion yen plot of land next to a Buddhist temple.

“Real estate prices in Tokyo have once again skyrocketed. Takumi Tsujimoto (Ayano) meets Harrison Yamanaka (Toyokawa), the leader of a notorious group of real estate fraudsters. Along with informant Takeshita (played by Kitamura Kazuki), conwoman Reiko (Koike Eiko), and legal advisor Goto (Pierre Taki), Takumi helps carry out real estate fraud as a negotiator. As the fraudsters engage in a skillful back-and-forth with landowners and major developers desperate to repurpose land, they are relentlessly pursued by the police. Amid the three-way battle between the fraudsters, the fraudulent, and the detectives, a series of unforeseen events causes cracks to form within the fraudster group, revealing the madness and greed among them. This conflict also brings Takumi’s past to light – and Harrison’s resentment,” an official synopsis reads.

The series is written and directed by One Hitoshi (“Motkei”, “Elpis”). Ishino Takkyu of the music group “Denki Groove” makes his debut as a composer and provides the series’ original music. Cinematographers are: Ato Shoichi and Morishita Shigeki.

The additional cast includes Sometani Shota (“Himizu,” “Parasyte: Part 1”), Matsuoka Izumi, Yoshimura Kaito, Anthony, Matsuo Satoru, Suruga Taro, Sports Makita, Ikeda Elaiza, Lily Franky (“Shoplifters”) and Yamamoto Koji.

The show is produced by Nikkatsu Corporation and Booster Project and will premiere on July 25. Yoshida Kenichi and Miyake Harue serve as producers.
