Will Joshua Zirkzee wear the famous number 9 shirt for Manchester United?

Zirkzee is United’s first summer signing.

Manchester United have made their first new signing of the current transfer window with the signing of Dutch striker Joshua Zirkzee, who will provide serious competition to Rasmus Hojlund for 9th place in the squad.

The 23-year-old striker had an excellent club season with Bologna, leading the club to qualification for the UEFA Champions League and scoring 12 goals in Serie A. The striker will now play in one of the most demanding leagues in Europe.

However, he will certainly need time to settle into the league. The striker will be crucial for Erik ten Hag as United needed a back-up striker for Hojlund following the departure of Anthony Martial who would also act as healthy competition. There is no doubt that the Danish striker will be a preferred option for ten Hag, but Zirkzee will have his moments.

What number will Joshua Zirkzee wear for United?

In Bologna, the youngster inherited the number 9. At Manchester United, the following numbers are available: 3, 4, 9, 13, 19, 26, 27, 30, 31, 33, 34, 36, 38 and 40. This means that the 23-year-old could wear the number 9, which was previously on the back of the departed striker Martial.

Many famous players have worn the number 9 at United, including Andy Cole, Brian McClair, George Best, Eric Cantona and Sir Bobby Charlton.

Meanwhile, Zirkzee is a different striker to Hojlund. The Dutchman likes to drop back and help build play, while Hojlund is more of a centre-forward who plays from box to box.

The Red Devils’ new striker wore the number 21 shirt when he was a member of Ronald Koeman’s Dutch team at UEFA Euro 2024.
