All about Chappell Roan: age, how she became famous, new music

What were our personalities before Chappell Roan came on the scene to serve up “CUNT” and pop ~supernova~ perfection? I literally have no idea how we spent our time when we weren’t streaming The rise and fall of a Midwestern princess on repeat, doing the HOT TO GO! dance in our bedrooms in the middle of the night, and obsessing over Chappell’s festival outfits. Just like Lady Gaga or Madonna, this redheaded woman from the Midwest was brought into this world to be Main Pop Girl – yes, I use that term as a verb – so thank goodness she is Finally to get the recognition she deserves.

Personally, not being like the other girls, I jumped on the Chappell bandwagon in 2022 when I discovered the dangerously addictive bop “Naked in Manhattan.” Just call me an A&R. But I realize a lot of people don’t know the queer icon and vocal powerhouse yet, so you probably have a lot of questions right now. Where does Chappell come from? How did she get famous? What’s the deal with that stage name? Read on to learn all about the already legendary Miss Chappell Roan.

How old is Chappell Roan?

Chappell was born on February 19, 1998, so the pop queen is now 26. On her 26th birthday, she shared a sweet Instagram carousel of casual selfies and some photos of performance outfits. She captioned the post, “My 26th year as a Midwest Princess 💌.”

Where does Chappell Roan come from?

The East Coast…just kidding. The Midwestern princess is from Willard, Missouri. She has spoken of growing up there as a “godchild” – Chappell went to church three times a week back then.

What is Chappell Roan’s real name?

Born Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, she chose the stage name Chappell Roan to honor her late grandfather, Dennis Chappell. His favorite song was “The Strawberry Roan” by Marty Robbins.

How did Chappell Roan become famous?

She was a YouTube girlie! Atlantic Records discovered Chappell’s cover videos and signed her when she was still a teenager. Apparently her high school announced her record deal over the loudspeakers in the same sentence they announced there would be pizza for lunch. (Two equally important pieces of information.)

For Chappell, signing the deal was just the beginning of years of hard work and financial hardship. “It’s funny because when you sign to a label, the real work begins,” she said The guard. She soon found herself busy with songwriting sessions and working with Olivia Rodrigo’s producer Dan Nigro.

When Chappell released her queer anthem “Pink Pony Club” in 2020, Atlantic dropped her. (I’m sure they feel great about that decision now.) She had to move back home, where she worked at a coffee kiosk and planned her next move. Chappell decided to save some money and give Los Angeles another chance. “I thought to myself: I don’t have any money, but I’m going to hold out; if nothing happens by the end of next year, that’s a sign I need to move back home,” she recalled to The guard.

Slowly but surely, things started to work out for her. Chappell released her debut album in September 2023 and since then she has opened for Olivia Rodrigo, performed a small NPR desk concert and performed on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert And The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon. She’s currently playing every festival in the world and is becoming more popular by the second! Nothing makes me happier than seeing this woman win.

When does Chappell Roan go on tour?

Chappell kicked her out Princess in the Midwest Tour in September 2023, and the European leg is still to come. You can also catch Chappell at one of the many upcoming festivals, including All Things Go, Lollapalooza, and Outside Lands! Find all of her upcoming tour and festival dates here.

Chappell only released her debut album nine months ago, so I think we still have some time before she drops her sophomore project. However, she and Dan did tease new music at the ASCAP Pop Awards in May. “I feel good about it, but at the same time, we’re literally just at the beginning of the recording process, it’s only been a couple of days,” Dan said.

Chappell noted, “I don’t have a big agenda for this next album. I plan to do what I’ve always done: write songs I love, make music I’m proud of, and share it with the world.”

In her last few performances, Chappell has been playing a new, unreleased song called “The Subway.” If she doesn’t release it ASAP, there will almost certainly be street riots.
