MUMBAI: Actress Sanya Malhotra will travel to Australia to screen her film “Mrs” at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2024 (IFFM). The film tells the complex and nuanced journey of a woman trying to find her own voice.

Speaking about the film’s Australian premiere, Sanya said: “I am thrilled and honoured that ‘Mrs’ is having its Australian premiere at the Indian Film Festival in Melbourne. This film is very special to me as it shows the complex and multi-layered journey of a woman trying to find her own voice despite what society expects of her.”

The actress will be accompanied by the film’s director, Arati Kadav, at the premiere in Australia.

Sanya added, “Working with Arati Kadav and the entire team has been a profound experience. I am confident that the story will resonate with audiences everywhere and I can’t wait to present it to the viewers at IFFM.”

The actress stressed that the film festival has always been an important platform for celebrating diverse narratives.

Mrs delves into the complicated life of a woman, played by Sanya, a trained dancer and dance teacher. After her marriage, she faces the challenges of wifehood while trying to find her own path and her own voice.

The film, a Hindi remake of the critically acclaimed Malayalam film The Great Indian Kitchen, traces her journey of self-expression amidst the societal expectations placed on her married life.

Also present are Kanwaljit Singh and Nishant Dahiya.

Sanya previously won the Best Actress award for the film at the New York Indian Film Festival and was also nominated for Best Actress at the IFFM 2024.

Director Arati Kadav said of the film: “This film delves into the emotional and social intricacies of a woman’s life and its being a central piece of the IFFM is a testament to its global appeal and relevance.”

“Sanya’s portrayal brings depth and authenticity to the character and makes it a powerful narrative,” she added.

Producer Harman Baweja said he was delighted that “Mrs.” would have its Australian premiere at the Indian Film Festival in Melbourne.

“This film is very close to my heart and to have it screened as one of the focal points of the festival is really fulfilling,” added Baweja.

The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2024 will take place from 15 to 25 August.
