BATTLE CREEK, MI — An 11-year-old boy was seriously injured when he was struck by a truck while riding his dirt bike, Battle Creek police said.

First responders were called to a crash near West Spaulding and Ashland Avenue around 7:15 p.m. on Thursday, July 11.

According to police, an 11-year-old Battle Creek boy was riding a Coleman mini dirt bike north on Ashland Avenue when he turned to head east on West Spaulding Avenue.

While the boy was on Spaulding, he was struck by a Ford F250 driven by a 41-year-old Battle Creek man, also traveling east on Spaulding.

Witnesses told officers they saw the boy ride his bicycle onto West Spaulding Avenue, ignore the yield sign, and then turn directly into the oncoming truck. The truck was unable to stop in time before hitting the boy.

Rescue workers performed CPR on the boy, who suffered cardiac arrest and serious injuries. The boy was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital. According to police, the boy has been in a stable but critical condition since Friday, July 12.

The accident is still being investigated, officials said on Sunday.
