Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who has often been at odds with Donald Trump over the years, condemned the assassination attempt on the former president on Saturday in Pennsylvania.

“The shooting of former President Trump was a heinous act of violence that caps an alarming, years-long trend in our politics,” she said in a written statement released Sunday evening.

“There were incidents we all know about: a shooting at a congressional baseball game practice, the plot to kidnap and kill me, the storming of the Capitol, and an attack on the husband of the former Speaker of the House in his home.

“There is rhetoric behind all of these incidents. We have seen calls to hate, harm, or imprison political opponents. Violent conspiracies from the seediest corners of the internet have been incorporated into campaign speeches. We have lost the plot when it comes to how we talk to and about each other.

“No matter what age you are, you’re affected by this trend. This vitriol has infiltrated our lives. It’s destroyed relationships and marriages, friendships and families. Almost everyone can think of someone they no longer speak to because of politics. I’ve met Michiganders across the state who experience these consequences every day. There’s just a deep-rooted sense of anger and distrust.”

Whitmer has often been mentioned as a presidential candidate for 2028, but she has also appeared in the presidential race in case President Joe Biden drops out of the race.
