In January, Doherty admitted on her podcast “Let’s Be Clear” with her oncologist Dr. Lawrence Piro that she was desperate to start a family with her ex-husband Kurt Iswarienko before her cancer relapsed in 2019.

“I wanted a child not only for myself, but also for my husband. I wanted it for our marriage. I wanted that part of him to be fulfilled, too,” Doherty said when talking about her desire to have children.

The couple met in 2011 and decided to undergo artificial insemination due to their age.

“So when it came time to make that decision, we needed IVF, and I went through several rounds of that,” said the star, who played Brenda on “Beverly Hills, 90210.”

“I think there’s nothing I’d rather do than be a mother,” she added. “I’ve always wanted to, and I think if I did it with my best friend or a partner, I don’t know how long it would take… I see kids who don’t have parents at all, and I think if I adopt a child or whatever, any amount of time is better than nothing. Maybe. I don’t know.”

After her cancer diagnosis, she stopped IVF.

In 2017, the star announced that her disease had gone into remission, but in 2019 the cancer returned and in 2020, Doherty told her fans that she was suffering from stage four metastatic cancer. In 2023, she announced that the cancer had spread to her brain and bones.

In early 2023, she and Iswarienko separated, and the star knew that her chance to have children had passed.

“I have a best friend, a best friend that we joke that we’re married to, and I’ve had huge breakthroughs with his two kids, and we just love each other and hang out together, and I kind of consider them my kids,” she said on the podcast.

The “Charmed” star’s longtime press agent, Leslie Sloane, confirmed the sad news of Doherty’s death in a statement.

“It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty. On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of battling it,” Sloane said.

“The devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend was surrounded by her loved ones and her dog, Bowie. The family asks for privacy at this time so she can grieve in peace.”
