Jennie Garth and Tori Spelling pay tribute to their late “90210” co-star Shannen Doherty

Beverly Hills, 90210 Stars Jennie Garth and Tori Spelling remember Shannen Doherty following her death from cancer at the age of 53.

The actress, also known for her role in Charmeddied on Saturday, July 13. The following day, her longtime publicist Leslie Sloane confirmed the sad news in an exclusive statement to PEOPLE, saying, “The devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend was surrounded by her loved ones and her dog, Bowie.”

On Sunday, Garth, 52, and Spelling, 51, posted touching tributes to their former co-star on their Instagram accounts.

Garth, who played Kelly Taylor in the series, posted two old pictures of herself with Doherty from the hit 1990s drama series. She said she was “still processing the news”.

“I am still processing my tremendous grief over the loss of my long-time friend Shannen, the woman I often described as one of the strongest people I have ever known,” Garth wrote. “Our connection was real and honest. We were pitted against each other so many times, but none of it reflected the truth of our real relationship, which was based on mutual respect and admiration.”

She remembered Doherty as “courageous, passionate, determined and very loving and generous.”

“I will miss her and will always hold her dear in my heart and memories. My heart breaks for her family and Bowie,” Garth concluded, referring to Doherty’s dog.

Doherty recently reflected on her friendship with Garth in a May episode of her podcast So that we understand each other“I see them at conferences, and we talk and, you know, we laugh,” she said.

Spelling, who played Donna Martin in 90210kept her post about Doherty short, but hinted that there was more to come. On her Instagram stories, she shared a selfie with Doherty showing a row of broken hearts. “I don’t have words for this yet, but WE knew and that’s what matters,” she captioned the photo.

Several other co-stars from the ’90s series have paid tribute to Doherty. Jason Priestley, 54, remembered his twin sister in an Instagram post, writing: “She was a force of nature and I will miss her. Sending love and light to her family during this dark time.”

Gabrielle Carteris, 63, who played Andrea Zuckerman, wrote in her post: “So young – so sad. May you rest in peace, Shannen. I know Luke is there with open arms to love you.” Carteris was referring to her former Beverly Hills, 90210 Co-star Luke Perry, who died in 2019 at the age of 52 following a stroke. Doherty and Perry remained close even after their roles as lovers in the series.

Doherty starred in the series for four seasons until her character was written off in 1994. She returned to reprise her role in the spinoff 90210 and the restart BH90210.
