Jack Velling was arguably Michigan State’s best transfer acquisition of the offseason.

The former Oregon State tight end followed Michigan State coach Jonathan Smith to East Lansing, where he will look to build on a very impressive season with the Beavers.

According to Big Game Boomer, Velling is the fourth-best tight end in all of college football for the 2024 season, only Notre Dame’s Mitchell Evans (No. 1), Utah’s Brant Kuithe (No. 2) and Michigan’s Colston Loveland (No. 3) are better.

Velling was named to the All-Pac-12 Second Team last season after rushing for 438 yards and eight touchdowns on 29 catches in 12 games. The year before, he rushed for 281 yards and three touchdowns on 16 catches in 11 games.

As great as Velling is as a player, his tight end coach Brian Wozniak, who also coached him at Oregon State, admires another trait of the Spartans’ new tight end.

“I think the coolest thing about Velling is how he conducts himself as a teammate,” Wozniak told reporters in April. “I think he’s a great player, don’t get me wrong. He’s always going to be an approachable teammate. I think he’s going to help the guys around him with that aspect of his game.”

“We tell all the quarterbacks in the tight end room that we are their safety net. That’s our goal in the passing game. That means we pay attention to the details in our game. When they see us fighting to have the details in our game, hopefully that will pay off, the quarterbacks will recognize that and come to us more often.”
