Maren Morris lets herself “fall apart” with Julia Michaels in her new song “Cut!”

How does Maren Morris do it?

The “My Church” singer-songwriter lets her guard down on “Cut!”, a new collaboration with Julia Michaels, about appearing perfect on the outside but feeling like an emotional wreck in private.

“‘Cut!’ is about me keeping it together throughout the day, looking rested, not a hair out of place, and not canceling dates with friends because I want you to think I’m doing so well,” Morris said in a statement about the song, which was released on Friday as the first taste of her upcoming 5-track album. Break EP, out Friday, August 2nd.

“Maybe those things are all true, but at night I drop the mask and let myself scream or fall apart to let the steam out of the boiler,” the Grammy winner added.

“It’s a cathartic release that doesn’t require secrecy, but there are worldly expectations that have to hold you together despite your feelings,” Morris continued. “This song gives me permission to fall apart.”

“Cut!” is the second collaboration between the two artists, as Michaels co-wrote “Circles Around This Town,” the first single from Morris’ latest album, 2022’s Modest search.

The song comes after a lot of recent personal news in Morris’ life. Earlier this month, the musician announced in a celebratory post that she identifies as bisexual.

“Glad to be the B in LGBTQ+,” Morris wrote alongside photos of herself holding Pride flags during her recent RSVP Redux tour stop in Phoenix. “Happy pride.”

The announcement came after she filed for divorce from her ex-husband Ryan Hurd, whom she was married to for five years, in October 2023, citing irreconcilable differences. The former couple (who share son Hayes, 4, together) divorced three months later in January 2024.

In September 2023, Morris announced that she would retire from the country music industry, marking the transition with her two-part EP The bridgewith the songs “The Tree” and “Get the Hell Out of Here”.

At the time, she expressed that she felt “very, very distant” from the genre and its politics, noting that she was trying to challenge the status quo in country music. “I thought I would like to burn it down and start over,” she told the Los Angeles Times“But it will burn down even without my help.”

However, Morris has since clarified her comments, saying that she is not leaving the genre entirely, but rather hopes to “leave the toxic parts” of the industry “behind.”

“I want to take the good parts with me,” she said on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen. “I’m from Texas and I grew up with all this music. The way I write and sing, that’s what comes out of it – no matter what genre or what piece I’m doing.”

According to Apple Music, Morris’ upcoming Break The EP is labeled as a pop release.
