Eminem becomes “Lucifer” in the Sly Pyper-assisted song “The Death Of Slim Shady”: Stream

The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce) is on everyone’s lips, and that’s because of the density and awesomeness of songs like “Lucifer.” Featuring a soulful and slightly bluesy chorus from Sly Pyper and a stark Wild Wild West-style beat, this song sees Eminem addressing the hypocrisy of Candace Owens, his familial upbringing, and his lack of lyrical grace towards pretty much any victim. Much of this song, just like some other songs like “Fuel,” contains a lot of attempts to infuriate, shock, and “erase” himself, and some of it is mixed.

But there are still hilarious, impressive, or exciting moments here, like a certain can of Coke, the rhyme scheme he uses to criticize Candace, or the idea that people would be better off fighting Kendrick Lamar than him. In fact, it even reignited the debate over whether Marshall or K.Dot would win in a rap battle. Based on the flows, wordplay, and rhyme schemes of “Lucifer,” we know it would be a tough opponent for both MCs.

Eminem feels in his element on The death of Slim Shadyfor better or for worse, and songs like “Lucifer” bring out some of the best realizations of that comfort. If you haven’t heard it yet, find it on your favorite streaming service (or stream it on YouTube below) and give the whole album a try. Quotable texts
You’re sleeping on the river, hey, do you hear those strings rising?
You reap what you sow, so I must first weave rhymes,
So seamless, then I will leave my eyes in a state of disbelief,
My genius is a trait, so the gap is in our genes, right?

In particular, Gabriel enjoys the fringes of rap music: the experimental, boundary-pushing and raw alternatives to the mainstream sound. A proud native of San Juan, Puerto Rico, he also stays up to date on the archipelago’s local scene and its greatest musical exponents in reggaetón, salsa, indie and beyond. Before working at HotNewHipHop, Gabriel produced several short documentaries, artist interviews, venue spotlights, and audio podcasts on various genres and musicians. Hardcore punk and go-go music informed much of his coverage during his time at George Washington University in DC. His favorite hip hop artists working today are Tyler, The Creator, Boldy James, JPEGMAFIA, and Earl Sweatshirt.
