Israel’s policy in the Gaza war has an overall genocidal character: Academics

Israel’s entire war policy in the Gaza Strip has a “genocidal character,” says a scientist, while the occupation regime escalates attacks on the defenseless population in the besieged Palestinian territory.

Luigi Daniele, a lecturer in martial law at Nottingham Trent University, made the remarks on Sunday.

The comments followed the “horrific massacre” carried out by Israel on Saturday in the al-Mawasi refugee camp near the city of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip.

“Waging war against civilians in such an unlawful manner means accepting the destruction of a group protected by the Genocide Convention as a side-cost of war,” Daniele said.

“Israel has long sought to distort the proportionality concept of the laws of war by gradually dehumanizing the hundreds of Palestinian civilians killed in each attack as ‘collateral damage.’ There is no legal basis for this.”

“This is per se a war crime of disproportionate attacks,” said the scientist, stressing that the fact that hundreds of these crimes were committed means that the overall policy of the war had a genocidal character.

Daniele also stated that following the recent massacre in Gaza, prosecutors at the International Court of Justice were gathering evidence for their ongoing genocide case against Israel.

On Saturday, Israeli F16 fighter jets carried out a series of air strikes on the al-Mawasi area, which the regime had designated a so-called “security zone.” The attacks, which took place around 10:30 a.m., killed at least 90 Palestinians and injured more than 300.

Many were still missing and rescue teams continued to recover dozens of victims from the bombing sites.

Earlier in the day, Israeli forces also attacked a UN-run school for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) in the Nuseirat refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip, killing 15 people and injuring 80 others.
