John Sadak and Barry Larkin of Bally Sports pointed out several times in the 5th and 6th innings of Cincinnati’s final series game against the Miami Marlins on Sunday that Reds starter Nick Lodolo’s two-strike pitch to Marlins infielder Jonah Bride should have been called a strike and not a ball.

“Great looking pitch called a ball,” Sadak said during the broadcast.

“Well, this one looks good. That was a punchout pitch,” Larkin added.

On the next pitch, Bride hit two goals with one hit.

“And now I think both sides are not happy with the zone. Derek Johnson was staring at the plate as he strolled out,” Sadak said.

“(Lodolo) tried to go back to the breaking ball,” Larkin continued. “And the previous pitch looked like strike three. And he tried to come back with it, left it over the plate. … Sometimes, John, that just makes the difference in the ball game. You know it’s a decision here or there. You never want to let that happen. You never want to be the victim of the umpire calling a ball or a strike. There’s not much you can do about that. That was a great pitch that was called a ball. You know what Lodolo is trying for the punchout. He gets that punchout, that changes everything.”

Larkin talked about the pitch again in the 6th inning.

“I believe Lodolo struck out Jonah Bride on a pitch in the zone, down and in,” Larkin said. “Breaking ball. Home plate umpire Brennan Miller ruled it a ball. On the next pitch, he went back to the breaking ball, over the plate. That led to the two runs.”
