Buying a cheap vehicle may seem like a practical decision rather than an investment, but that’s not always the case. There are reasonably priced cars on the market that are only expected to skyrocket in value over the next decade.

“Classic cars can be a great investment opportunity if you want to buy a relatively inexpensive vehicle now and potentially sell it later for a higher price,” says Alan Gelfand, owner of German Car Depot, an independent auto service center specializing in the maintenance and repair of German vehicles.

Gelfand added: “As these cars become increasingly rare and more sought after by collectors interested in automotive history, their value tends to increase.”

Here are some affordable cars that will skyrocket in value over the next decade.

BMW2002

“The BMW 2002, produced between 1968 and 1976, is loved for its sporty driving feel and its important place in BMW history as the predecessor to the famous BMW 3 Series,” noted Gelfand.

These cars are becoming increasingly difficult to find in good condition, driving up their price, so Gelfand recommends securing one now while you still can.

“Right now you can find them for about $7,000 to $15,000, depending on condition,” he explained. “Those prices could double in the next decade, especially for the well-maintained models or those with special features like the tii variant.”

Chevrolet Camaro

Ben Michael, automotive director at Michael & Associates, believes the Chevy Bolt’s value is likely to increase over the next decade.

“These cars have already proven that they have consistently good resale values, much higher than the average vehicle,” Michael said, pointing out that 2023 models typically trade for around $26,000.

“In addition, Bolts are no longer being manufactured, which means there is a limited supply left,” he pointed out. “The limited quantity remaining means this car is becoming increasingly rare, and rarity leads to increased value.”

Nissan 300ZX (Z32)

A throwback to the ’90s, this twin-turbo sports car from Nissan offers a solid balance of performance and nostalgia, contributing to its expected increase in value.

Back in 2021, Car and Driver pointed out that “… (although) a few years ago virtually any Z32 was available for a bargain price, there is now a clear price split.”

“Non-turbo 300ZXs can still be had for well under $10,000, but climb to $20,000 depending on mileage. High-mileage turbos start in the mid- to high-teens. The best turbos cost between $40,000 and just under $60,000, but decent examples can be had for the mid-$20,000s.”

Volkswagen Beetle

Specifically, you need a VW Beetle from 1967. According to Gelfand, this Beetle is also one of the vintage cars that can be expected to increase in value significantly.

“The 1967 Beetle is often considered the best vintage among collectors because it had a unique mix of features before major changes were made in 1968,” said Gelfand.

“Currently, these cars can be had for $13,000 to $40,000,” he noted. “As they become increasingly rare, their value is expected to increase. The Beetle’s iconic status and the fond memories people have of it also contribute to its potential increase in value.”

Porsche 944

“The Porsche 944, produced from 1982 to 1991, is another affordable classic that is expected to increase in value,” explained Gelfand, pointing out that the Porsche 944 is known for its balanced handling and performance.

“As it becomes increasingly difficult to find well-preserved models, their prices are starting to rise,” he continued. “You can buy a Porsche 944 now for around $10,000 to $25,000, but expect those prices to rise as the car becomes more of a classic and replacement parts become harder to find.”
