Another possible night game for Michigan Football in 2024

Another possible night game for Michigan Football in 2024

The Michigan Wolverines will open the season in primetime against the Fresno State Bulldogs in Ann Arbor on NBC on Aug. 31. It is currently the only primetime game on Michigan’s 2024 schedule. That could change in the near future if the NBC network’s wish is granted, according to a report from Action Network’s Brett McMurphy in June.

The report includes a list of games NBC would most like to broadcast in prime time, and includes the October 5 Michigan-Washington game.

– September 21: Iowa at Minnesota

– September 28: Illinois at Penn St.

– October 5: Michigan in Washington

– October 12: Ohio St in Oregon

– October 19: Iowa at Michigan St.

– October 26: Penn St in Wisconsin

– November 2: USC in Washington

– November 9: FSU at Notre Dame

– November 16: Oregon at Wisconsin

– November 23: USC at UCLA

– November 30: Oregon in Washington

Should NBC get its wish, it would certainly add to the already tough challenge the Wolverines face in the West. For starters, Michigan’s away game against Washington will be the Wolverines’ first away game all season. Husky Stadium is also known for providing one of the toughest (and loudest) environments in all of college football, and there’s no doubt the Husky crowd will be at its best when the Wolverines come to town for a rematch of the 2024 National Championship game. The added element of playing this game at night would take the energy – and the challenge – to new levels.

Many have written off the Huskies as a team with too much to replace starting in the 2023 season, but that seems a little shortsighted. Sure, Washington lost many key players to the NFL this offseason — including QB Michael Penix Jr. and WR Rome Odunze. The Huskies also lost head coach Kalen DeBoer to Alabama. But new head coach Jedd Fisch has been extremely active in making up for those losses via the transfer portal, grabbing a total of 29 players — good for the fifth-most of any FBS program.

One of those 29 transfers is QB Will Rogers from Mississippi State, a guy who made 40 starts with the Bulldogs and holds 30 program records. He is also the SEC record holder for single-season completions (505 in 2021), the record holder for career completions with 1,301, and the only quarterback in SEC history with over 1,000 career completions.

Rogers will obviously have his hands full with a Michigan defense loaded with future NFL talent, and it’s very likely that the Wolverines will enter the Week 6 game as the betting favorite regardless of when it takes place. But if that game does indeed become a primetime matchup with Washington in Seattle, it will certainly make an already tough environment even more difficult.
