What was that joke Chris Rock made about Will Smith’s wife Jada at the Oscars?

The moment Will Smith met comedian Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars was the most talked about moment of the night.

The King Richard The star, who won the Oscar for Best Actor about 15 minutes after the altercation, criticized a joke Rock made about his wife, fellow actress Jada Pinkett Smith.

Rock was onstage at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles to present the award for best documentary feature when he made a remark about Pinkett Smith’s performance.

“Yada, I love you. GI Jane 2“Can’t wait to see you,” he joked, apparently referring to Pinkett Smith’s shaved head.

GI Jane was a 1997 American drama film starring Demi Moore. The fictional story is about the first woman to complete special training similar to that of the US Navy Seals. Moore, who won the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actress for her performance, had a shaved head for the film.

Pinkett Smith – who revealed last year that she shaved her head after a battle with alopecia – was seen in the audience with her husband, rolling her eyes at Rock’s comment.

After the joke, Smith stood up and walked to the stage, whereupon the comedian let out an “uh oh.”

Then Smith slapped Rock in the face with the palm of his hand.

“Wow! Wow. Will Smith just beat the shit out of me,” Rock said, looking visibly shocked as an angry-looking Smith left the stage.

Smith was then heard screaming, “Keep my wife’s name out of your damn mouth,” to which Rock replied, “Wow… dude. It was a GI Jane Joke.”

“Keep my wife’s name out of your damn mouth,” Smith yelled again.

“I will, OK?” Rock said before looking back into the camera. “This was the greatest night in the history of television,” he said before presenting Questlove with the award for best documentary. Summer of the soul.

The Independent has reached out to Smith’s representative for comment.
