These 8 road closures are affecting traffic in Michigan this week

If you are taking a trip or resuming your commute, be aware of numerous road construction projects that may impact traffic flow this week.

According to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), more than 50 new lanes, ramps and road closures are expected to occur between Sunday, July 14, and Saturday, July 20.

Drivers should expect possible traffic delays on highways such as I-196 Business Loop in Ottawa County, US 131 in Kalamazoo County and I-75 in Wayne and Oakland counties, especially during rush hours.

Below is a rundown of eight closures to be aware of this week. All projects are weather dependent. State officials remind drivers to slow down and obey signage in work zones.

A complete list of road construction projects is available through MDOT’s online map and construction directory.

US 131 in Kalamazoo County

US 131 northbound from XY Avenue to Lyons Street will be closed at midnight Monday for construction. Motorists are asked to take US 131 northbound to XY Avenue, then go east on XY Avenue to Portage Road, go north on Portage Road to U Avenue, then go west on U Avenue to US 131.

The reopening of the affected area is planned for July 29.

M-46 in Muskegon County

Daytime lane closures for roadwork are planned on M-46 – also known as Apple Avenue – from Quarterline Road. The closures will last from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will continue through Thursday.

I-196 Business Loop in Ottawa County

On Tuesday, ramps along the I-196 Business Loop will be closed for several months.

Due to construction, the ramps to westbound I-196 Business Loop to northbound and southbound US 31 will be closed. The left shoulders of westbound and eastbound I-196 Business Loop between 88th and 96th Avenues will also be closed.

All closures will remain in place until November 11, MDOT said.

M-21 in Kent County

The eastbound and westbound lanes of M-21 from Hudson Street to Division Street will be closed for several weeks starting at 8 a.m. Monday. To avoid the construction, drivers are asked to use Washington Street.

Workers are expected to reopen the road at 4:00 p.m. on August 15.

I-75 in Wayne and Oakland counties

Multiple one-lane, two-lane, ramp and full closures are planned on sections of I-75. All closures are scheduled to go into effect Monday.

In Wayne County, the southbound I-75 ramp to eastbound I-94 will remain closed through August 30. Two lanes of southbound I-75 and northbound I-94 will remain closed for maintenance through August 2. A one-lane all-day closure is planned on northbound I-75 from the Ambassador Bridge to Vernor Highway.

In Oakland County, the northbound I-75 ramp to Dixie Highway will remain closed until August 12. The right shoulder of southbound I-75 from Coolidge Road to 13 Mile Road will remain closed for construction until July 29. Construction crews will also close southbound I-75 from Corporate Drive to 13 Mile Road until July 29.

I-94 Business Loop in St. Clair County

As a special measure, portions of the I-94 Business Loop will be closed Thursday through Sunday. The northbound and southbound lanes from Water Street to Andrew Murphy Drive will be closed. Crews will also close both directions of the I-94 Business Loop from Erie Street to I-69.

I-96 in Livingston County

An all-day closure planned for Monday will temporarily close the ramp from eastbound I-96 to southbound US 23. The ramp is scheduled to close at 9 a.m. and reopen at 4 p.m., MDOT said.

M-82 in Newaygo County

Due to a special event in the City of Fremont, the eastbound and westbound lanes of M-82 from Weaver Avenue to Stewart Avenue will be closed from July 14-21.
