3 workers suffocate in illegal coal mine in Gujarat: police

Surendranagar:

Three workers in an illegal coal mine in Surendranagar district of Gujarat have died of suffocation, police said on Sunday.

Four people have been charged with intentional killing without murder and efforts are underway to apprehend them, an official said.

The victims, Lakshman Dabhi (35), Khodabhai Makwana (32) and Viram Keraliya (35), were digging in a mine near Bhet village in Thangadh taluka of the district when they died of suffocation on Saturday, an official of Muli Muli police station said.

The trio did not wear helmets, masks or other protective equipment while working for the defendant, he said.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), the accused did not provide helmets or other protective equipment to the people who died while digging a well.

They said they died because they inhaled gas from the well.

A case has been filed against Jashabhai Keraliya, Janak Aniyaria, Khimjibhai Saradia and Kalpesh Parmar, the official said.

The bodies of the killed workers have been sent for autopsy, he added.

In early February, three workers died from inhaling toxic gases caused by an explosion caused by gelatin sticks at an illegal mining operation in the district.
