“The US came within a quarter of an inch of civil war”: Economist Sanjeev Sanyal on Trump’s survival of the assassination attempt

Renowned economist Sanjeev Sanyal expressed his deep concern about the current state of the world on Sunday, particularly the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. In a post on X, he warned that the United States had escaped civil war by only a quarter of an inch.

“The United States was an inch away from civil war. Let that sink in. Whoever is playing this dangerous game must be hunted down. Never forget that civilization is a Ponzi scheme. It sucks when it unravels. Never assume it won’t happen in your lifetime,” Sanyal said in a post on X.

Sanyal’s comments follow the life-threatening attack on former US President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump during his rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday. He was seen raising his fists at his supporters as he was escorted out. Blood was visible on Trump’s face and ear as he reached for his neck with his right hand.

The economist also drew links between the Trump assassination and other recent political attacks around the world. “I would not be surprised if there was a connection between the assassination of Abe, the assassination of Fico and now Trump. The world is in a very dangerous situation now,” Sanyal noted.

Video footage showed Donald Trump clutching his ear as shots rang out. The crowd began to scream and someone shouted, “Down, down, down!” Secret Service agents quickly surrounded Trump to protect him. Chaos broke out as people in the back of the hall ran toward the exits.

Blood was seen pouring from Trump’s ear as he was led off the stage. Before leaving, he boldly raised his fist in the air and told the crowd to “fight!” He was then rushed in a car to a hospital near Pittsburgh. As he was led to safety, Trump said, “Let me get my shoes.”

The shooting left one bystander dead and two others seriously injured. The incident is being investigated as attempted murder. The male attacker was also shot by a Secret Service agent.
