Father John Misty – “I guess time makes fools of us all”

Father John Misty has treated his fans to a brand new song, “I Guess Time Just Makes Fools Of Us All,” and teased the release of a brand new album. Everything was shared via a secret link and the song has not yet officially appeared on streaming services.

The singer-songwriter, whose real name is Josh Tillman, sent a text message to his fans who signed up to his mailing list on July 13. The message included a link to his brand new single and teased that something new was coming soon.

Those who signed up received a simple message that read: “Hey, it’s Josh. Here’s a new song – ‘I Guess Time Just Makes Fools Of Us All’.” He continued: “The song is on the record that’s coming out later this year (DON’T TELL ANYONE) but when the idea came up to do a compilation/greatish (sic) hits thing, we were definitely missing a 10-minute funk song to sum up what a deceptive and triumphant experience the whole thing has been so far.”

Tillman continues, “It doesn’t exactly scream ‘single’ or anything like that… but I wanted you to hear it.”

His description of the song is pretty accurate. At 8 minutes and 35 seconds long, this is a challenging track and an even more challenging track released as a teaser for the new album. It doesn’t hide what it’s about from the first moment, as the beat is energetic and fun, funky guitar, bass and horns provide the perfect dance backdrop.

Tillman’s vocals are as beautiful as ever. His voice is effortlessly smooth throughout this lyric-heavy ballad, which he sings with ease. Each phrase brings the singer back to the chorus line, “I guess time makes fools of us all,” which feels especially calculated during such a long song.

Tillman is right, however, that this track could never be a single. While it sounds nice and is fun to delve into, it doesn’t offer much variety and after about five minutes the song becomes extremely repetitive.

The new release doesn’t come as much of a surprise to fans as it did last month when the singer-songwriter announced two brand new songs on his social media. Fans speculated that one of the songs, or possibly the album, would be called “Josh Tillman And The Accidental Dose”; however, this has yet to be confirmed or denied.
