Famous fitness guru Richard Simmons dies at 76

Well-known fitness icon Richard Simmons has died at the age of 76. He was found unconscious at his Hollywood Hills residence in Los Angeles, California on Saturday, just one day after his birthday party, and was reportedly found by his housekeeper.

In a message on social media for his birthday, Simmons thanked his fans: “Thank you… I have never had so many messages on my birthday in my life! I’m sitting here writing emails. Have a wonderful rest of your Friday. Love, Richard.”

In a career spanning more than four decades, Simmons was a popular fitness coach and motivator who became known for his vibrant energy and humor.

His impact on the fitness world was profound. He directed 65 fitness videos, including the hugely popular “Sweatin’ to the Oldies,” which sold over 20 million copies. He also hosted “The Richard Simmons Show,” a television series that ran for four years and won multiple Emmy Awards.

In addition to being a fitness guru, Simmons was also a passionate advocate of dieting and promoting healthy eating and regular exercise. He rose to prominence in the 1970s and became a cultural phenomenon in the 1980s, known for his high-energy workout routines and colorful outfits.

His influence went beyond the fitness world: he opened numerous gyms, advertised various health products and became a well-known face on television and radio.

Earlier this year, Simmons announced on social media that he had been diagnosed with skin cancer. Although he has retreated from public life over the past decade, his messages have continued to inspire.

In a poignant post in March, he reflected on mortality, declaring, “I… am dying. The truth is we all die. With each day we live, we come closer to our death.” He later clarified that his intention was to encourage people to live life to the fullest.
