Slipknot’s worldwide “Here Comes The Pain” tour celebrates the 25th anniversary of their album of the same name and will draw heavily from their 1999 debut. The North American leg, produced by Live Nation, includes arena appearances nationwide this summer. Highlights include Madison Square Garden in New York City, two consecutive nights at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles, the Moody Center in Austin and more with direct support from Kentucky’s young and dynamic hardcore/metal trailblazers Knocked Loose. Orbit Culture and Vended are confirmed as opening acts on select dates.

There was a time when Slipknot and the Maggots (the affectionate name given to their fans) didn’t rule the world. Twenty-five years ago, the Des Moines band members were just a couple of guys trying to get attention with their new LP – a record that would begin their metamorphosis into the most important band of the 21st century. This record would change rock as we know it and measure success by a larger yardstick than music: influence on youth culture in general. But these faceless demons from middle-class America didn’t just capture the hearts of the youth, they helped shape their tastes and lead them and their relatives into a new future.

Slipknot’s eponymous debut was released on June 29, 1999, and was a massive hit with critics and an instant classic with fans. It was, and still is, a Molotov cocktail that signaled a revolution – a creative direction that rejected metal traditions in favor of fresh ideas. While the stunning riffs combined with Ross Robinson’s venomous production were crucial to the album’s success, it was the care and attention to detail in the songwriting that took it from “great” to “benchmark.” Not bad for a group of guys just hoping to be heard.

“We were excited about what we accomplished with the first record, but we didn’t even know if there would be anything after that,” recalls guitarist Jim Root. “We just wanted people to hear it. Sold-out records and shows, successful tours – those are goals for every band. But for us, that dream scenario has come true in some ways.”

In the years that followed, Slipknot roamed the popularity trail of the band’s elder statesmen and even heroes, eventually navigating this brave new world with endless drive, fresh ideas and a bloodlust for odometer clicks. Ten billion streams and ten million subscribers and followers later, the accolades speak for themselves: 64 award nominations and 27 awards, including a Grammy for “Before I Forget” from Vol. 3. A seemingly endless number of tour dates. Headlining slots at some of the world’s biggest festivals like Download, Rock In Rio, Hellfest, Wacken and many more. Not to mention RIAA accolades galore – 14 platinum awards and 40 gold awards on more than 30 million records and videos sold.

In addition, Slipknot positioned themselves for success with the creation of their own festival, Knotfest, in 2012, a traveling, multi-stage experiential event that has taken place 28 times in different countries and locations. The festival has since evolved into a successful entertainment media hub – Knotfest.com, which has become a juggernaut of its own creation, providing a platform for young freethinkers and likeminded artists.

All of Slipknot’s successes have helped them take their rightful place as pioneers and trailblazers, and established them as a generational talent – beloved by parents AND their children alike. And of course, with all of those incredible live performances, all of that influence, and all of that history of playing all of those incredible songs, Slipknot has attracted only the most devoted fans, stretching back to that fateful self-titled opus.

Slipknot approaches this 25th anniversary with a conscious decision to build as close a connection as possible with its fans, similar to how they met Slipknot all those years ago. “Every time I’ve gone on stage, it’s never been about how many people were there, because my culture, the maggots, always shows up,” says founding member Shawn “Clown” Crahan with a smile.

“But as a band we’ve grown and had fewer of those intimate, personal moments. Instead, there are more massive ones now. So we’re going to make it more personal on the anniversary, but how remains to be seen. Be prepared for someone to kick you in the face. Because we’re just doing what we do: we’re spreading this maggot culture – this disease. And you’re infected.”
