Chad Daybell was sentenced to death for the murder of 7-year-old Joshua “JJ” Vallow, 16-year-old Tylee Ryan and his first wife, 49-year-old Tammy Daybell.

On Thursday, May 30, Chad was found guilty of six counts related to her death and two counts of insurance fraud.

As the Ada County courts in Idaho announced on Saturday, June 1, according to CNN, a verdict was reached by the unconvened jury before Judge Steven Boyce announced the sentence after a recess.

ABC News reported that Chad showed no emotion as Boyce read the jury’s verdict.

JJ and Tylee were the children of Chad’s second wife, Lori Vallow. Vallow was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in July 2023 for the murder of her children and conspiracy to murder Tammy.

Unlike Chad, she did not face the death penalty.

Chad Daybell listens during his preliminary hearing on August 3, 2020 in St. Anthony, Idaho.

The jury in the murder trial took two days after the conviction to make its decision.

CNN reported that the jury deliberated Chad’s fate for six hours on Friday before disbanding for the night. They deliberated again Saturday morning until the court announced its decision.

In a statement released Saturday by the Tammy Douglas Daybell Foundation, the Douglas family thanked “law enforcement, the prosecution, the media” and everyone who “watched and heard the trial and prayed for us.”

The family said they were “grateful for the relationships we have built during this terrible time and for the support and love we have been able to give each other,” adding that it was time to “begin healing from the terrible losses we have suffered.”

“We will miss Tammy every single day of our lives, but we take some comfort in knowing we will see her again,” the statement continued.

Chad was a doomsday writer when he met Vallow in 2018. In September 2019, JJ and Tylee disappeared. The following month, on October 19, Tammy died in the home she shared with Chad.

Two weeks later, on November 5, Lori and Chad were married in Hawaii while JJ’s grandparents reported the children missing.

Before Chad’s murder trial concluded this week, it lasted nearly two months and included testimony, including from Chad’s two adult children, Emma Murray and Garth Daybell. (Chad was married to Tammy for nearly 30 years and had five children with her.)

Nearly nine months after JJ and Tylee disappeared on June 9, 2020, their badly decomposed remains were found buried on Chad’s property in Idaho. Tylee had been dismembered and burned; JJ was wrapped in plastic and bound with duct tape.

During Vallow’s trial in 2022, a medical examiner revealed during testimony that JJ was suffocated with a plastic bag and duct tape over his mouth. News from Eastern Idaho, KTVB reporter Alexandra Duggan and Fox 10 reported at the time.

The cause of Tylee’s death has not yet been determined due to the severe burns to her remains, media reported.

Fremont County District Attorney Lindsey Blake also revealed during Lori’s trial that Tammy’s cause of death was asphyxiation. It was initially ruled an accident.

JJ’s grandfather, Larry Woodcock, spoke out after Chad’s sentencing during a press conference shared by KSL. “This is a sad day,” he said. “JJ would have been 12 years old, folks. For what?”

He also expressed his thoughts about Tylee and Tammy before adding, “JJ, daddy loves you. JJ, I miss you.”
