Clean Air Action Day for Sunday, July 14

Warmer weather has returned to West Michigan, and with it more air quality alerts are being issued for the region.

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) has declared a Clean Air Action Day for Sunday, July 14, 2024. This is not surprising given the expected temperatures of over 80/90 degrees. The warning was issued due to elevated ozone levels.

What is a Clean Air Action Day?

As mentioned above, an air quality alert is issued by EGLE when elevated ozone levels are expected. When these levels are elevated, the atmosphere is considered “unhealthy for sensitive groups.”

Which counties in West Michigan are under an air quality warning?

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy has issued the warning for the following counties:

  • Allegan
  • Berries
  • Kent
  • Muskegon
  • Ottawa
  • Van Buren

What precautions should be taken during a clean air day?

Individuals and businesses in the counties listed above are encouraged to avoid activities that can cause ozone formation during Clean Air Action Days. These activities include fueling vehicles and using gasoline-powered lawn equipment and grill lighters.

People are encouraged to carpool, walk, bike, postpone or combine errands, and use water-based paints.

In addition, EGLE recommends that children and adults with respiratory diseases such as asthma limit their outdoor exertion.
