The Único 13U boys soccer team earned its first victory at the National Presidents Cup in Kansas on Friday, defeating Hulmeville Soccer Club of Pennsylvania 2-0.

The Santa Barbara club team is one of two teams representing the Western Region of the United States in the eight-team national tournament in Wichita.

The opening match of the tournament was a surprise win against Único, as Hulmeville Soccer Club is ranked 10th in the country and is the highest seeded team in the field.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the effort our guys put in to get a big win for our program tonight,” said Único assistant coach Rob Brennan. “After the first 10 minutes, we controlled the game with possession and created a lot of scoring opportunities.”

“We took them out of the game and played great football technically and physically tonight.”

Hulmeville started quickly and controlled the ball early and often, but Único goalkeeper Tanner Hug kept the game scoreless with several impressive saves.

From then on, Único made adjustments on defense and took control of the matchup.

In the 20th minute, Únicos Nito Quintero found teammate Andrew Vasquez, who fought his way through two defenders and slotted the ball into the net to take a 1-0 lead.

Not long after, Bradley Brennan and Cruz Alvarado engaged in a one-two that ended with a goal by Brennan that gave Único a 2-0 lead that lasted for the rest of the game.

Único will continue bracket play on Saturday at 7 p.m. with a match against Chelsea East of Texas.
