Eurovision Song Contest fans claim to have witnessed a new beginning for the cult film thanks to Estonia’s performance

Eurovision Song Contest viewers thought they were seeing a cult film reboot during Estonia’s performance. The 68th edition of the contest took place in Sweden on Saturday night (11 May), a year after the UK had the pleasure of hosting the epic event in Liverpool.

Following Loreen’s win in the city in 2023 with the song Tattoo, the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest was held at the Malmö Arena in the coastal city. It will be the seventh time Sweden has hosted the world’s biggest music event and, coincidentally, also 50 years after Abba won the contest with their hit “Waterloo”.

It was Victoria, the Swedish Crown Princess, who opened the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 live from the Malmö Arena and said: “Good evening. It is a great honour for me to welcome you all to Sweden. I hope you will enjoy the show and I wish all the participants the best of luck.”

Meanwhile, TV talk show host and our own Eurovision icon Graham Norton said at the start of the annual song contest: “It’s been quite an eventful Eurovision Song Contest this year.”

The commentator on BBC One’s coverage said: “Hopefully we can give you the usual beauty, chaos, madness and of course male nudity tonight. We are here at the Malmo Arena.”

The competition soon got underway and Swedish band Marcus & Martinus opened the competition with their performance of Unforgettable. But a few acts later, Estonia’s 5MIINUST x Puuluup took the stage with “(nendest) narkootikumidest ei tea me (küll) midagi”.

And her wardrobe choice made people think of Will Smith and his 1997 action/sci-fi film Men in Black. @JamesPope10 said: “The Men in Black reboot looks strong… #Est #Eurovision2024. I like the Graham Norton stag party reference.”

@QuakerJon posted: “It’s the Estonian Men in Black #Eurovision2024.” @pawsometweets wrote: “Men in Black vs Grease vibes #Eurovision2024 #Eurovision #Sweden.” @saraheverts added: “Ageing Men in Black with esoteric instruments, courtesy of Estonia #EURO2024 #Eurovision2024.”
